Impacts of economic slowdown due to COVID-19 are felt throughout Indonesia at different proportion. Population in rural area have seen their income opportunities further diminished as urban centres consumption slowed down. The closure of market place further shrunk opportunities for rural population who depend mostly on the sale of agriculture produce to gain income. Intensification and diversification of agriculture productivity is one way to overcome this challenge. Therefore, together with Perkumpulan Mnukwar Papua, the project provides agriculture and product development training for rural and sub-urban population of Manokwari District, West Papua. There are five training programmes from introduction of agriculture mechanisation, organic farming system, to the production and marketing of agro-food products. With the skills gained from the training, participants will see an increase of income up to 10% as farm productivity rise and raw materials transformed to better-valued products.
Stories VideoCOVID-19 pandemic emphasises and demonstrates the importance of access to essential services. As an archipelagic country, Indonesia faces particular challenges when it comes to provide secure and equal access for all. This is even more apparent in remote and small islands. The area of Banggai Laut District in Central Sulawesi is 80% water, making boats as the main transportation means for its population. However, the number of mechanics or repair shops specializing on marine engines is almost non-existent. Fishermen and villagers repair and maintain their small boats without proper knowledge, resulting in sub-optimal machines and shortened machines’ lifetime. To ensure transportation means during emergency, such as accessing the hospital for COVID-19 patients, and to support the livelihoods of coastal populations, the project and Yayasan Puter Indonesia conduct small marine engines maintenance and repair training. The training collaborates with marine engine makers to produce skilled mechanics specialising on small marine engines, as well as new businesses of machine repair and spare parts shops.
